“Hey sweetie, how was the first day of school?” “You can read that in my vlog, daddy.” Well, that’s Gen Z for you — the digital generation. These Gen Z or iGen are ready to take on this world. The demographic cohort after the millennials, that is, the Gen Y, are known as the Gen Z. In other words, those people born between the mid 1990’s and mid 2000’s are the Gen Z. It is after the arrival of the Gen Z that the world has witnessed many milestones that would forever be read by the successors of the iGen. These include the Great Recession, ISIS, Sandy Hook, marriage equality, the first black president and most importantly, the rise of populism.

Now, how could a child who has just finished her first day of school, know about such things like vlogs? That’s the distinctive feature of this Gen Z. These people are tech-innates unlike the Gen Y who were just tech-savvies. The web revolution of the 1990’s has made the Gen Z to have “a digital bond with the internet”. They are rightly been called as “the digital natives”.

The Gen Z doesn’t stand for status quo. They make things on their own. They have already mastered the skill of multitasking. In fact, these social entrepreneurs are realists and want to work for success. It is found that 60% of the iGen wants to have an impact on the world. What’s more? 28% of them desire for balancing work and personal life in the future. They have already earned so many names like the hashtag generation, entertainment addicts, micro-miners, speed demons and so on.

Another interesting feature of the Gen Z is that they are “8 second consumers”. This means that advertisements get only 8 seconds to impress them. This also implicitly means that their span of attention is only 8 seconds. This shows their thirst for speed.

Though all these are pleasing to hear, there is always another side to the coin. Starting from this generation is the plethora of horrendous infirmities. Every household has a Gen Z member who has cancer, diabetes, mental health issues, weakness and so on. Another problem is the excessive exposure to unwanted stuff. We know about the parkland issue. We are also aware of the upsurge in cyber crimes. What is the remedy for this? Maybe the Gen Z would just cross the bridge when it comes to them. But will they? Where are these philanthrokids going to take us? To know this, be ready to zoom with them.
